About Veterans for Peace

Our chapter meets the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 6:45 PM at the Community Building in Spokane at 35 West Main Ave.

Veterans for Peace is the only veterans organization devoted to promoting peace. Our chapter 35, based in Spokane, WA includes vets from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc., including our senior veteran from the first wave of Marines on Iwo Jima. We work toward the following objectives:

  • Truth in Recruitment: Explaining the real nature of military service to high school students considering enlistment.
  • Exposing the true cost of war and militarism.
  • Exposing the toxic polluting generated by the military in general and Fairchild AFB in particular.
  • Addressing PTSD and veteran suicide.
  • Aiding veterans to navigate the bureaucracy required to collect benefits due.
  • Addressing the cost of military aid to foreign, generally repressive governments.
  • Co-sponsoring speakers and events that contribute to peace and justice.

Spokane Veterans for Peace was chartered in 1989 as the 35th chapter of the organization begun in Maine in 1985.  The late Sean Daly, founder of the Colville chapter and the first VFP leader west of New England, was active in the Peace and Justice Action League of Spokane and was determined to have a Spokane chapter.

The original Spokane group was mostly Vietnam era veterans with three men who had served in World War II.  After several years of Memorial Day and Veterans Day events and educational programs on Selective Service and military recruiting, the Spokane group diminished in size and lost its chapter status, but remained a resource for local peace organizations.

In 2010, the chapter reorganized with several original members and a dozen or so new ones to be re-chartered by the national body.  Since that time, we have thrived with new energy and ideas and members from four branches of the U.S. military and veterans from Iraq to Iwo Jima.  Meetings are held monthly at the Community Building.
